Rotate and Mirror Video: Straighten, Flip, Swap Sides
Vertical phone footage lying on its side, front-camera selfies facing the wrong way, a clip playing fully inverted — rotation and mirroring each fix a distinct problem. Pick the right one and it is a one-step fix.
Rotation: 90, 180 and direction semantics
Rotate 90 degrees fixes sideways vertical footage: phone video (the sensor reads landscape) lies flat in a landscape player, and a clockwise quarter-turn stands it up. Note the width-height swap: 1080x1920 becomes 1920x1080, and your vertical composition loses most of its frame — physics, not a tool flaw.
A 180-degree turn is pure inversion: mis-oriented clips flip upright with composition and dimensions intact. Counter-clockwise 90 handles the other lying direction. Rotation is an information-preserving rearrangement — pixels change position, not content, so quality is untouched.
Mirroring: horizontal and vertical use cases
Horizontal flip (mirror) most often serves front-camera footage: the phone previews mirrored for intuition but records unmirrored — text reads backward and your dominant hand is on the wrong side. One flip restores it. Dance and fitness follow-along videos mirrored to match the instructor feel far more natural.
Vertical flip is rare in daily use and mostly creative: water reflections, symmetry plays, visual gags. Mirror and rotation combine freely — straighten first, then mirror, ordered by what the footage needs.
The mirror side effect and operation order
Mirroring flips everything in the frame: captions read backward, logos invert, road signs become unreadable. The correct order is mirror first, add captions second — burned-in captions that get mirrored cannot be un-flipped; they can only be cropped out and redone.
When footage contains must-read text (tutorial screen recordings), confirm before mirroring: if text must stay legible, skip the mirror and solve orientation another way. Both operations are lightweight; the tool re-encodes as needed at standard settings.
