30fps or 60fps: Choosing Frame Rate by Content Type
Frame rate buys smoothness at the cost of size and processing time. The rule is simple: if the frame rarely changes fast, 30fps is enough; fast motion needs 60.
By content type
- Talking head / interviews / courses: 30fps — slow motion gains nothing at 60.
- Slide and screen demos: 30fps.
- Gaming / sports / aerial: 60fps — 30 shows judder on fast pans.
- Cooking / craft close-ups: 30, or 60 when hands move fast.
- Same settings, 60fps costs roughly 1.6–1.9× the size of 30fps.
Bitrate must follow frame rate
Platforms keep your source frame rate through re-encoding, but a low-bitrate 60fps upload degrades worse than 30fps: the same bitrate is split across twice as many frames. Pair 1080p60 with 6000 kbps or more, otherwise 30fps looks better.
Downshifting existing footage
60fps compatibility matches 30fps — playback failures are usually codec (HEVC), not fps. Processing time, however, roughly doubles. Dropping 60→30fps saves about 40% size; static content shows no difference, fast motion gets slightly less fluid.
