Sending Video on Telegram: Compress or File
Telegram is the only mainstream messenger that hands the quality decision to you: send as video and let the platform compress, or send as file and nothing touches a byte.
Two send modes, two outcomes
Send as video: the platform transcodes to H.264 and compresses — instant playback, thumbnail, scrubber, at the cost of quality you cannot control. Send as file: bytes pass through untouched; the recipient gets a file identical to yours.
The decision rule is simple: casual viewing goes as video (saves data, plays instantly); masters, archives and anything destined for further editing always goes as file. Quality sent away as a compressed video does not come back.
Size ceiling and cloud behavior
Free accounts allow 2GB per file, Premium 4GB. Cloud storage does not consume device space, which is why many people use Telegram as a transfer drive: upload footage to Saved Messages, retrieve on any device. Forwarding shares the same cloud file — a hundred forwards never add a single re-compression pass.
2GB comfortably covers a single edited piece: 10 minutes of 1080p at 8–12 Mbps is 600–900MB. Only long 4K high-bitrate masters approach the ceiling — compress locally first, because file mode will not compress for you and video mode compresses on its own terms.
Practical playbook
Quick share to a group: video mode, H.264+AAC MP4 for maximum compatibility. Delivery and archive: file mode, byte-identical, forward-safe. Large-file distribution: compress to the audience first (1080p social spec) rather than making recipients pull a 4GB original.
iPhone users: HEVC-encoded MOV sent as file may not open on Windows or Android. Convert to H.264 MP4 before delivery and compatibility is solved in one step.
