Videos for Shop Screens: Resolution, Looping and Silence
Shop TVs, expo walls, counter displays — screens that loop all day have their own rules: resolution matched to the panel, seamless looping, and usually no sound at all.
Learn three things about the screen first
Physical resolution: 1080p or 4K — a mismatched video gets stretched and soft. Orientation: wall-mounted portrait screens are common; a landscape video on a portrait screen means pillarboxing or cropping. Playback method: USB stick, TV box loop, or a commercial signage system — this determines decoding capability and loop behavior. Confirm all three before making any asset.
Format and codec: compatibility first
Display devices keep conservative decoding, and nobody is on site when they misbehave. H.264 plus AAC in MP4 is the only safe answer: H.265, VP9 and AV1 frequently show black screens or stutter on old TVs and budget boxes. Trade some file size for a mid-high quality tier, but never gamble on codec support — follow the USB-on-TV compatibility playbook.
Making the loop seamless
A display video loops hundreds of times a day, and every first-to-last-frame jump gets seen. Two approaches: end where you began — the last frame returns to the opening composition so the loop point is visually invisible; or build a true loop whose first and last frames are identical. For rotating content, merge the pieces into one continuous video instead of relying on the player’s playlist — playlist gaps and black frames vary unpredictably across boxes.
Audio, size and the delivery check
Most shop environments play silent: strip the audio track entirely — smaller files and no looped soundtrack annoying staff or customers. Viewing distance on large screens is long, so text and subjects should run one size larger than for phones. Before delivery, play two full loops on the actual screen and check the loop seam, edge cropping and stretching. There is no platform re-encode here: what you hand over is what plays, all day.
