Slow Motion: Why Frame Rate Decides Smoothness
Two clips slowed to half speed can feel completely different: one glides, one stutters. The difference is not the tool. It is the frame rate of the source.
What slowdown actually does
Slowing a clip stretches its timeline: the same frames play for longer. At 0.5x, a 30fps source effectively plays at 15 frames per second, and the widened gaps between frames become visible judder during fast motion.
The threshold depends on content. Talking heads and walking shots hide 0.5x slowdown well. Fast pans, jumps and sports footage start stuttering at 0.5x. Test by watching the fastest-moving part of the slowed clip.
Choosing the factor: safe and extreme zones
0.75x is always safe: nothing betrays it. 0.5x is the workhorse zone for moderately paced content. 0.25x is the extreme zone: only native high-frame-rate sources survive it, because a 30fps source at 0.25x plays at an effective 7.5fps.
For buttery slow motion, fix it at capture time: shoot with the phone’s slow-motion mode at 120fps or 240fps. A 120fps source at 0.25x still plays at an effective 30fps, which is fully smooth.
Pitch, length and the finishing pass
Slowdown lengthens audio too, but pitch must not drop with it, or voices turn into unnatural lows. Time-stretch without pitch change keeps the original pitch while extending duration; tools do this by default.
For empty shots that will get new music anyway, muting the audio before slowing is simpler. Check two things at the end: judder in fast sections, and whether voices sound natural. Then move on to music, editing or publishing.
