The 30-Second Sample Encode: Find Settings Before the Full Run
Re-encoding an hour-long film with five parameter sets to pick the best is a three-hour waste. Cut the hardest 30 seconds first and find the settings on a sample.
Why a sample can represent the whole film
Encoding difficulty is distributed very unevenly: static scenes survive anything, while fast motion plus dense texture is where compression collapses. Take the most violent 30 seconds of motion and detail in the film — settings that survive the sample are safe for the film, and settings that break on the sample are not worth a full run.
How to cut the sample
Use precise trimming to extract two or three hard 10-20 second segments (action, pans, crowds, dense on-screen text) and join them into a 30-60 second test clip; cut in re-encode mode for frame accuracy. Never use the opening as the sample — intros are usually static logos and slow pacing, the least representative part of the film.
The parameter matrix and what to look for
Two or three parameter sets are enough: quality one step above and below your usual value (say CRF 23, 26, 28, or matching bitrate tiers) with everything else identical to the final plan — same resolution, encoder and preset, only the quality dial moves. Compare results pairwise: blocky smearing in fast motion, ringing or flicker on text edges. Find the setting where “one step lower starts to break” — that is your ceiling.
Handing off to the full encode
Apply the sample-chosen settings to the full film unchanged, then spot-check two or three hard segments to confirm they match the sample’s behavior. This compresses hours of trial encoding into minutes, and before batch processing it pays for itself immediately — settings validated on a sample can be reused across a whole batch of similar footage, unless the shooting conditions clearly differ.
