GIF to Video: Sharing, Editing, and Adding Sound
GIFs thrive in group chats and fail everywhere else: no sound in editors, rejected by feeds, ignored by TVs. MP4 opens all of those doors at once.
When you must convert
Social feeds that refuse GIFs are the top reason: your animation posts as a frozen first frame. Editors will import GIFs, but the format carries no audio and frame-based footage tends to drop frames on the timeline. Older TVs, boxes, and conference screens often ignore GIFs entirely.
MP4 with H.264 and AAC is the widest-compatible target: every platform accepts it, editors treat it natively, and it can carry sound. Converting is not busywork - it is the passport from sticker culture to video culture.
Color and frame rate after conversion
GIF stores at most 256 colors; video is full-range YUV. Gradients visibly smooth out after conversion - skies and glow effects look better, which surprises people the first time. Keep the frame rate as-is (GIFs are usually 10-15 fps); do not interpolate to 30 fps. The source has no in-between frames, so invented ones smear motion.
Same for size: a 480x270 source stays 480x270. Upscaling adds no detail, just softer pixels. MP4 is usually smaller than the same GIF anyway, which platforms appreciate.
After converting: sound and publishing
No sound is a GIF limitation, not a conversion bug - there was never an audio track to carry. Once it is MP4, add music or effects in an editor and export H.264.
If the platform flags the size, run one compression pass on the MP4 - CRF around 26 is visually transparent for this kind of footage. The whole pipeline runs in your browser; nothing uploads.
