FLV Legacy Videos: Playing and Converting Flash-Era Files
FLV was Flash Video — the container of 2005–2015 web video. Flash is dead and browsers refuse the format, but the files survive in archives. What you do depends on which codec era the file came from.
Two generations of FLV
- Late era (H.264 + AAC inside, so-called F4V era): remux to MP4 — instant, lossless, done.
- Early era (Sorenson H.263, VP6, MP3): no MP4-compatible video — full transcode to H.264 required. Quality is already poor; do not expect miracles.
- Screen-recording FLVs (Flash meeting tools) are usually the H.264 kind and remux cleanly.
Handling tips
Check codecs before converting — a 2-second probe tells you whether you are remuxing or re-encoding. Old VP6 content at 320×240 will not improve; upscale only if you must embed it in modern material.
