Product Video for E-commerce: Ratio, Length & Compression
The product video on an e-commerce listing is the highest-traffic video you will ever publish - it loops silently, and viewers leave within seconds if it does not grab them. Wrong ratio or excess length means a rejection before anyone even watches it.
The spec consensus
Most marketplaces want 1:1 square for the main listing video; some categories accept 3:4 vertical. Length should stay under 30 seconds - the job is density, not storytelling. Over a minute and click-through actually drops.
Autoplay is silent. Your first three seconds must work without audio: on-screen text or visuals that explain the product on their own. Treat sound as a bonus, not a requirement.
Fix length first, then bitrate
Order matters: cut to 30 seconds before you optimize quality. A fixed size budget stretches twice as far across 30 seconds as it does across a minute. 720p is enough - listing videos render small, and the difference between 720p and 1080p at that size is invisible while the file size doubles.
For a 30-second 720p H.264 clip, 2-4 Mbps is plenty - roughly 10-15MB. Verify the real parameters with a local checker instead of trusting the export preset name.
Batch pipeline for catalog uploads
Ten SKUs means a pipeline, not ten manual sessions: one crop ratio, one resolution, one bitrate, SKU-coded filenames. Batch tools turn the whole catalog uniform in one pass.
The hidden benefit is change management: when the marketplace adjusts its rules, you update one parameter set and re-run everything, instead of re-deciding ten times.
