Drone Footage: Stabilize, Downscale, Compress
Aerial footage faces two realities: 4K at 100 Mbps-plus makes every minute heavy, and flight wobble makes stability a requirement. Process in the order crop, stabilize, downscale, compress — and check the sky first.
Footage traits: high bitrate and wobble
Consumer drones record 4K at 100 Mbps and up — 700MB-plus per minute, tens of gigabytes per flight log. The high bitrate is post-production headroom: crop reframing, stabilization’s own crop cost and any color correction all draw on that margin.
Flight wobble and handheld shake share a mechanism: wind corrections and stick inputs are translational shake, which a stabilization tool’s search-radius compensation handles well. Jello effect (elastic frame deformation from insufficient vibration isolation) is per-frame warping, not global translation — software cannot fix it. That is a gimbal/damping problem, not a post problem.
The pipeline: crop, stabilize, then compress
Recommended order: crop first (ground clutter, tilted horizon, edge distortion), then stabilize (start at the default strength, raise only if needed), then downscale for the delivery target (4K→1080p), then compress. Stabilization itself crops to compensate, so settle the composition before stabilizing to avoid stacking two crops.
Compression tiers follow the use case: CRF 22–26 at 1080p for social delivery; lean toward 22 when detail matters (cloud layers, water texture). The sky is a large low-texture region and the first place banding (gradient stepping) appears when bitrate runs short — inspect the sky first after any compress; it is the litmus test of aerial quality.
Delivery and archiving
For social delivery: 1080p at platform-spec bitrate; vertical reframes via crop — cutting 16:9 down to 9:16 loses a lot, so decide the platform before takeoff. For masters: high-bitrate H.265 halves storage without visible loss, and originals are worth keeping at high bitrate — post-production margin cannot be added back later.
D-Log/HLG footage is flat by design and needs grading for the aerial look; these tools do not grade. For direct publishing, shoot in standard color. Leave grading to dedicated software and let local tools own the deterministic steps: crop, stabilize, downscale, compress.
