Making Blurry Photos Clearer: What AI Upscaling Can and Cannot Do
Upscaling models rebuild plausible detail: mild softness, low resolution and compression noise improve visibly, with lossless 2× PNG output. But nothing recreates detail the sensor never recorded — severely out-of-focus photos stay blurry.
What responds well
- Mild soft focus: clear improvement, edges and texture rebuilt.
- Low-res screenshots and thumbnails: far better than naive stretching.
- Compression-noisy old images: denoising and detail rebuilding happen together.
- Severe out-of-focus or motion smear: limited — the information was never recorded.
Usage notes
Output is 2× lossless PNG (1000×800 becomes 2000×1600); resize down to the target size afterward if needed.
Shrink large inputs below ~1 megapixel before upscaling — processing time drops enormously for nearly identical results. Crop old photos to the subject first to concentrate effective resolution.
Expectation setting
Upscaled photos look better at 100% zoom but rebuilt detail (hair, texture, text) remains inference. Documents and ID photos are worth reshooting, not upscaling. Text in screenshots becomes closer to readable, but verify critical information against the source.
