Pitch Shift Without Changing Speed

The backing track is in C but your voice only reaches A — a pitch shifter moves the whole audio to the key you need in seconds, with duration unchanged. Master one concept, the semitone, and you have the whole tool.

The semitone: the only unit you need

Twelve-tone tuning splits an octave into twelve steps; one step is one semitone. The tool's range is plus or minus twelve semitones — a full octave either way at maximum. Everyday needs never reach the extremes: fitting a vocal usually takes one to three semitones.

Direction is simple: positive raises the key (higher, brighter), negative lowers it (deeper, darker). Backing tracks that sit too high for your range move down two or three semitones; a dull voiceover brightens with half a semitone to one.

The cost and the boundary

Pitch shifting re-synthesizes every frequency component; small shifts sound natural, large shifts sound wrong — voices turn thin and sharp when pushed up, muffled when pushed down. Stay within four semitones and most material shows no processing artifacts.

Keep pitch and speed apart: speed changes playback rate (duration changes), pitch changes musical key (duration stays). Speeding through a two-hour recording is a job for the speed tool (see the podcast speed-up guide); mismatched keys are the pitch tool's job. The overlap between the two needs is tiny — never substitute one for the other.
