Buzz and Hum in Recordings: Fix the Source Before Denoising
A steady buzz or hum in a recording is usually not a broken microphone — interference entered the signal chain somewhere. Order matters: fix the source first, denoise second.
Identify the noise type first
A steady 50/60 Hz hum is power interference (a phone near a speaker produces something similar). Uniform hiss is noise floor from excessive gain. Irregular clicks and pops point to a loose connection. Noise that appears only inside recording software leans software or driver.
Identify by looking: zoom into the spectrogram. A hum shows fixed bright vertical lines in the low band; hiss spreads evenly across the spectrum; pops are isolated spikes. Different types take different fixes — this identification is the whole first step.
Fix the source: priority above everything
Power interference: change the USB port, keep cables away from power lines and routers, use a properly grounded outlet for laptops. Noise floor: lower the mic gain and speak close to the microphone — signal-to-noise improves instantly. Loose connections: swap cables and ports one by one.
The effectiveness test: record ten seconds of silence and listen back. Clean silence means the rest is gain; still noisy means keep hunting the source. Denoising cannot rescue strong interference recorded into the waveform — it only suppresses light, uniform noise floors. That is exactly why the source comes first.
Denoise with restraint
With the source fixed, light noise floor remains — use a denoise tool starting at the lowest strength. Then compare the voice for metallic or watery artifacts: those marks mean the strength went too far and the voice is being damaged. Try both engines at one step each and keep the one with fewer artifacts. A trace of audible floor is preferable to a muffled voice.
What cannot be saved, and prevention
Strong interference already in the waveform (bright low-band verticals, dense clicks) will take the voice down with it — re-record. Prevention checklist: record a ten-second test before the real take, put phones in airplane mode, keep gain on the low side. Clean audio can be amplified later; buried audio cannot be recovered.
