ASS Subtitle Styling: Fonts, Outlines and Placement
SRT carries text and timing only; ASS adds fonts, colors, outlines and placement. If you want subtitles that look designed, the ASS style model is the step you cannot skip.
The ASS style model: define once, apply everywhere
ASS centralizes appearance in its style block: font name, size, primary color, outline color, shadow, alignment and margins on all four sides. Dialogue lines only reference the style name, so one edit restyles the whole film — the fundamental reason ASS suits finished subtitles while SRT does not: restyling SRT means re-timing or burning in from scratch.
Fonts and sizes that survive other devices
Use fonts that exist on the recipient’s device: sans-serif families (Source Han Sans, Microsoft YaHei class) have the widest coverage. Special fonts silently fall back to defaults on devices that lack them — your refined design never appears on their screen. Size follows video resolution: start around 54-64 (ASS units) for 1080p and scale up proportionally for 4K; too small is unreadable on phones, too large buries the picture.
Outlines and shadows: the readability duo
White text over busy footage needs a 2-3 pixel black outline — the universal solution that lifts characters off any background. Shadows add a floating feel but turn muddy over complex scenes; enable them for clean footage, disable otherwise. A semi-transparent backing box is the other route: best for extremely busy frames, with a news-caption flavor — match it to the content’s tone.
Placement and vertical safe zones
Bottom subtitles default to bottom-center alignment; the vertical margin sets the distance from the bottom edge. For vertical videos, raise it: platform UI — the like rail, captions and progress bar — all sit at the bottom and will cover flush-bottom text. Top-aligned subtitles suit lyrics or titles; mind the clash when both top and bottom text appear together.
Practical workflow
You do not need to memorize fields: open the ASS file in a text editor, edit the font, size and color fields in the style line, save, and preview one screen in an editor. Before delivery, confirm ASS support in the target environment — some players and platforms only take SRT, in which case apply the same styling thinking to font and outline choices before burning in.
