Action Camera Workflow: Rotate, Select and Compress Your Footage
Action camera footage (GoPro, DJI Action, Insta360) has three recurring problems: chaotic orientation, disk-filling 4K files, and a very low ratio of watchable moments. This guide turns raw cards of footage into watchable, storable, shareable files — in the browser.
Orientation first: rotate everything upright
The first pitfall of casual action-camera shooting is orientation: clamped sideways, mounted upside down, spun mid-shot. Use the rotate tool to bring every clip upright — 90 and 180 degrees cover most corrections.
Rotation re-encodes, so output H.264 MP4. Rotate before compressing so the two operations can collapse into one encode pass, avoiding a second generation of quality loss.
Do not confuse flipping with rotating: a mirrored selfie needs a horizontal flip, not a 180-degree turn. Diagnose which problem you have before touching anything.
Selection logic: action footage has very low highlight density
An hour of riding footage may contain two watchable minutes. Judge by change: sudden angle shifts, speed changes, falls and recoveries, interaction with companions. Keep those; cruise-along segments only if the story needs them.
Cut highlights with the trim tool, a few seconds to a dozen seconds each. Action footage wants a fast rhythm — long single segments lose viewers. After rough selection, re-order the segments narratively.
Leave one or two seconds of buffer around peak moments (corners, jumps, finishes) rather than cutting them tight. Impact needs a moment of setup.
Compression strategy: what to do with 4K
4K high-frame-rate files eat drives fast. Layer the strategy: highlight films export at 1080p or 4K high quality; process footage compresses to 1080p mid-tier for storage; worthless rejects get deleted outright.
For compression choose the slower, smaller-leaning tier (a couple of CRF steps up). Motion-heavy frames stress the encoder; slower settings visibly reduce motion-block artifacts.
Keep originals only when you may re-edit later — different platforms or a year-end compilation. Mark those clips, and delete the rest after processing.
Output and distribution: match each platform’s expectations
For short-video platforms export vertical or square: when cropping action footage to vertical, place the action in the lower-middle of frame with headroom above. Horizontal uploads to Bilibili or YouTube keep the original frame.
Platform re-compression is aggressive; compress to a sane size yourself first so the quality decision stays in your hands. Uploading huge originals just hands your quality to someone else’s encoder.
Note that built-in stabilization happens at capture time — browser tools cannot rescue heavy shake afterward. Severe shake means discard; turn on in-body stabilization while shooting.
